Whistler in October: Weather, Fall Colors, Things to Do & What's Open
Whistler in October 2026: no skiing and no Peak 2 Peak, but fall colors, a quiet Village, ziplining, food and culture. Weather, what's open by date, events, winter tires and a Vancouver day trip that still works.
October in Whistler sits between seasons. Summer is over, ski season has not started, and Peak 2 Peak and the alpine sightseeing are closed. The Village is still lively, the lower trails turn gold, ziplining and a handful of adventure tours keep running, restaurants put on fall menus, and the event calendar is busier than the words “shoulder season” suggest.
Quick answer: Come in October for fewer crowds, fall colors, food, culture, ziplining and a slower Village. Pick another month if your trip depends on Peak 2 Peak, alpine hiking or skiing.
The easiest October trip from Vancouver is still the classic one: Shannon Falls, the Sea to Sky Gondola and an afternoon in Whistler Village. The From Vancouver: Whistler, Sea to Sky Gondola & Shannon Falls day trip (4.7/5 from more than 1,400 reviews, from about $121) covers all three, with the gondola open daily through the month.

Early vs late October
October 1–12
The last of the summer activities are still on:
- the Bike Park (Fitzsimmons zone)
- lower-elevation hiking and walking
- bear tours
- ziplining
- ATV and side-by-side tours
- golf, on the courses that stay open
- the Sea to Sky Gondola, on its longer early-fall hours
October 13–20
A changeover week. More of the seasonal outdoor operations finish, and the gondola moves to shorter hours.
October 21–31
Culture, food, films, Halloween, galleries, museums and a quiet Village become the main reasons to come.
Peak 2 Peak in October
Peak 2 Peak is closed for all of October 2026. Many visitors assume Whistler’s best-known gondola runs year-round, so check this before you plan a day around it. Winter sightseeing is scheduled to restart on November 25, 2026, subject to operations; our Peak 2 Peak tickets, prices and hours guide has the winter dates.
Can you ski in October?
No. Whistler Blackcomb’s target opening day for winter is November 20, 2026, subject to conditions.
Bike Park
Lift-served riding in the Fitzsimmons zone continues through October 12, 2026. After that, do not plan around the Bike Park.
Things to do in October
Whistler Village
Good all month, and quieter than the summer and winter peaks. Walk the stroll, stop at Olympic Plaza and take your time over lunch.
Lost Lake and the Valley Trail
One of the best October outings on a dry or drizzly day. The paved Valley Trail links the Village to Lost Lake on foot or by bike, with gold leaves along the way.
Ziplining
A strong paid activity for the shoulder season, because it does not depend on the sightseeing gondolas. The Zipline Adventure in Whistler (4.9/5 from 1,569 reviews, about $122) and the Whistler: Ziplining Experience with Ziptrek (4.9/5 from 495 reviews, about $134) both start from the Village and run about two and a half to three hours. Our Whistler zipline tours guide compares the courses.
ATV and side-by-side
A muddy forest adventure that suits fall. The Call of the Wild ATV Tour (4.9/5 from 470 reviews, about $167) runs three hours on backcountry trails above the valley.
Bear viewing
Bear tours usually keep running into early or mid-October, before the bears den up, and sightings are never guaranteed. The Whistler: Morning with the Bears Land Rover Scenic Excursion has the most reviews (4.3/5 from 273 reviews, about $149); the Whistler Bear Tour scores higher on a smaller count (4.8/5 from 85 reviews, about $145). Check that your date still has departures before you book.
Audain Art Museum
Excellent on a rainy day, and good enough that you do not need rain as an excuse. It opens Thursday to Monday.
Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre
One of the most meaningful all-weather visits in Whistler, run by the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations. It opens Tuesday to Sunday; allow 60 to 90 minutes.
Whistler Museum
An easy 30 to 60 minutes of local history in the Village.
October events
The 2026 program includes:
- Whistler Wine Walk Fridays
- Thanksgiving weekend (October 10–12, 2026)
- the Whistler Outdoor Festival
- farmers’ market dates
- Whistler 50
- mountain and film events
- mushroom programs
- Halloween
Check the exact dates on the organizers’ pages before you travel, since shoulder-season programs can move.
Sea to Sky Gondola in October
This is the workaround for Vancouver day-trippers. Peak 2 Peak is closed, but the Sea to Sky Gondola near Squamish stays open every day in October. The 2026 hours are:
| Dates | Hours |
|---|---|
| October 1–12 | Monday–Thursday 9 a.m.–6 p.m.; Friday–Sunday 9 a.m.–8 p.m. |
| October 13–23 | Weekdays 9 a.m.–4 p.m.; weekends 9 a.m.–5 p.m. |
| October 24–November 15 | Daily 9 a.m.–5 p.m., last ride down 6 p.m. |
That makes the classic October day:
Vancouver → Shannon Falls → Sea to Sky Gondola → Whistler Village
An adult ticket costs CAD 73.95 online. If you only want the gondola, the Squamish: Sea to Sky Gondola Admission Ticket (4.8/5 from 625 reviews, about $55) is the simplest booking. Our Sea to Sky Gondola tickets, prices and hours guide has the full calendar.
Fall colors
Expect a mixed Coast Mountain palette, with patches of color among the evergreens:
- gold and yellow leaves
- orange
- dark evergreen conifers
- grey rock
- sometimes early snow on the high peaks
Lost Lake, the Valley Trail and the Village itself are the easiest places to see the colors.
Hiking
Lower-elevation walks stay practical, weather permitting. Do not assume the high alpine trails are still snow-free or reachable by lift.
Food
October is one of Whistler’s best months for food value. You get fall dining offers and easy restaurant bookings while visitor numbers are low.
Some restaurants close for a few weeks in the shoulder season, so check a specific place before you plan the day around it.
What to pack
- a waterproof shell
- a warm mid-layer
- waterproof walking shoes
- warm socks
- light gloves and a hat later in the month
- sunglasses
Pack for rain first. One average temperature tells you little about a given day.
Winter tires
From October 1 to March 31, cars on the Sea to Sky Highway (Highway 99) need legal winter tires with the M+S or mountain-snowflake mark and at least 3.5 mm of tread. If you rent a car in Vancouver, ask for winter tires when you book. A tour or the bus takes the driving off your hands; our Sea to Sky Highway stops guide covers the road.
A Vancouver day trip in October
Morning
Vancouver to Shannon Falls.
Late morning
The Sea to Sky Gondola.
Afternoon
Whistler Village, Olympic Plaza, and either a museum or a short Lost Lake walk.
Evening
Back to Vancouver.
The Westcoast Sightseeing Whistler, Sea to Sky Gondola & Shannon Falls day trip follows this order. The Vancouver: Sea to Sky Gondola and Whistler Day Trip by Pacific Coach (4.8/5 from 1,111 reviews, about $120) is similar, but its season ends on October 31. On Viator, the Whistler, Sea to Sky Gondola, & Shannon Falls Tour from Vancouver (4.8/5 from 2,186 reviews, about $167) is another option. Our Whistler day trip from Vancouver guide compares the ways to get there.
A rainy-day itinerary
Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre → lunch → Audain Art Museum → Whistler Museum → dinner, or the Wine Walk on a Friday
The Cultural Centre and the Audain are both open Thursday to Sunday, so those four days suit this plan best.
