Whistler Gondola vs Peak 2 Peak: Which Gondola Do You Need?

Whistler Village Gondola goes up, Peak 2 Peak goes across. How Whistler's gondolas fit together, which one to start with, what the ticket covers and when they run.

Updated October 2026

Whistler has several gondolas, and their names make the system sound more confusing than it is.

The key distinction:

  • Whistler Village Gondola: Whistler Village → Whistler Mountain
  • Blackcomb Gondola: Upper Village → Blackcomb Mountain
  • Peak 2 Peak: Whistler Mountain ↔ Blackcomb Mountain

So if you want to ride Peak 2 Peak, you first need one of the other two gondolas to get up into the mountain network.

Quick answer: For a classic sightseeing day, buy the mountain sightseeing ticket that includes Peak 2 Peak, not three separate lift tickets. In summer that ticket covers the Whistler Village Gondola, the Blackcomb Gondola and Peak 2 Peak together.

Which gondola should a first-time visitor ride?

During full summer sightseeing operation, the most satisfying route is often:

Whistler Village Gondola ↑ → Peak 2 Peak ↔ → Blackcomb Gondola ↓

That gives you both mountains, and you come down a different way from the one you went up.

Other Experiences

Other experiences you might enjoy

More to book on Whistler Mountain and Blackcomb once you are in the village: ziplines over Fitzsimmons Creek, helicopter flights to the Coast Mountains glaciers, and Sea-to-Sky day trips from Vancouver.

Whistler Village Gondola

This is your gateway from the pedestrian Village to Whistler Mountain.

Start here if:

  • you are staying in the main Village
  • Whistler Mountain is your priority
  • you want the simplest route to Peak 2 Peak
  • you want the Peak Express chair and the Cloudraker Skybridge, when they are operating

Blackcomb Gondola

The Blackcomb Gondola starts in Upper Village and climbs Blackcomb Mountain.

Start here if:

  • you are staying in Upper Village
  • you want to begin on Blackcomb
  • you want to finish your day coming down Whistler Mountain

It is not better than the Whistler Village Gondola; it simply serves the other mountain.

Peak 2 Peak

Peak 2 Peak is the famous cross-valley link.

It travels about 4.4 km between Whistler and Blackcomb in roughly 11 minutes, with an unsupported span of about 3 km and the cabin up to 436 meters above the valley floor. Our Peak 2 Peak tickets, prices and hours guide has the full figures.

So “Whistler Gondola vs Peak 2 Peak” is a misleading comparison. The two do different jobs.

Do you need separate tickets?

No, not for a sightseeing day. In the main summer season Whistler Blackcomb sells one Summer Alpine Experience ticket that covers the Whistler Village Gondola, the Blackcomb Gondola, Peak 2 Peak and the Peak chair. In summer 2026 the adult one-day price was CAD 110.

The ticket gives you one trip up, as many Peak 2 Peak crossings as you like during the day, and one trip down.

Always check the current seasonal product before you go, especially in the shoulder seasons.

Current shoulder-season reality

As of early October 2026, the main alpine sightseeing gondolas are closed between the summer and winter seasons.

That is why your date matters as much as the price.

October 2026

Regular Whistler alpine sightseeing is closed. The bike park may still use some of the lifts, but that does not mean sightseeing tickets are on sale.

Winter Peak 2 Peak sightseeing is scheduled to resume on November 20, 2026, Whistler Blackcomb’s target opening day, subject to snow and conditions.

Creekside Gondola

The Creekside Gondola mainly serves skiers and bikers. Do not assume it is a normal summer sightseeing alternative to the Whistler Village Gondola.

Which is more scenic?

Whistler Village Gondola

Best for watching the Village and the valley drop away as you climb.

Blackcomb Gondola

A different angle over Upper Village and Blackcomb’s slopes.

Peak 2 Peak

Best for sheer scale, the Fitzsimmons Valley and the feeling of crossing between two mountains.

For visual drama, Peak 2 Peak is the standout.

Only two hours?

If Peak 2 Peak is operating, use your time to include it, instead of riding one gondola up and the same one back down.

If the alpine is closed, or you would rather stay lower, the Ziptrek Ziplining Experience is a good alternative: it zips across Fitzsimmons Creek between the lower slopes of Whistler and Blackcomb and finishes in Whistler Village. It is rated 4.9/5 from more than 450 reviews, from $134.

Half day?

Three to four hours is a much better use of the sightseeing ticket: the ride up, both mountains, Peak 2 Peak, a short walk and something to eat.

Full day?

Use the entire network, and add mountain viewpoints and hiking when they are operating.

Vancouver day trip

If your guided tour gives you only two or three hours in Whistler, staying in the Village may be the better choice. The classic Whistler, Sea to Sky Gondola & Shannon Falls day trip gives you about three hours of free time in Whistler Village, which is enough for the village but tight for the alpine. It is rated 4.7/5 from more than 1,400 reviews, from $121.

Peak 2 Peak becomes more realistic with four to five hours in Whistler, or an independent full day. If you would rather not drive, the private Peak 2 Peak winter tour from Vancouver on Viator includes hotel pickup and the Peak 2 Peak ticket. It is rated 4.7/5, but from only 10 reviews, and costs from $477. Our Sea to Sky Gondola and Whistler day trip guide explains how the time on a tour is split.

Sea to Sky Gondola vs Whistler gondolas

The Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish is a separate attraction, and it fits more naturally into the drive between Vancouver and Whistler. See our Sea to Sky Gondola tickets, prices and hours guide.

Whistler’s gondola network is best when Whistler itself is your destination.

Winter non-skiers

Non-skiers can use winter sightseeing tickets when the mountain network is operating. In 2026/27 those tickets are valid from November 20, 2026 to April 18, 2027. Skiers normally ride Peak 2 Peak with their lift ticket or pass instead of buying a separate sightseeing ride.

FAQ

Is the Whistler Gondola the same as Peak 2 Peak?

No. The Whistler Village Gondola takes you up Whistler Mountain from the Village; Peak 2 Peak crosses between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains.

Do I need to ride another gondola before Peak 2 Peak?

Yes. Peak 2 Peak does not start at street level, so you first ride the Whistler Village Gondola or the Blackcomb Gondola to one of the mountain terminals.

Which gondola should I start with?

For most visitors staying in central Whistler, the Whistler Village Gondola is the natural starting point.

Is Peak 2 Peak open year-round?

No. It closes between the summer and winter seasons.

The bottom line

The Whistler Village Gondola goes up.

The Blackcomb Gondola goes up and down the other mountain.

Peak 2 Peak goes across.

Most first-time sightseers do not need to choose one and skip the others. When the full system is operating, they work together.
