Whistler Christmas Day Trips from Vancouver: December 24, 25 and 26

Can you visit Whistler from Vancouver on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or Boxing Day 2026? What is open, how to get there without a car, gondola sightseeing, Wintersphere's December 25 closure and three day-trip itineraries.

Updated November 2026

Yes, you can visit Whistler from Vancouver over Christmas 2026, even on December 25. Whistler Blackcomb’s winter season is underway by then, the Village is dressed for the holidays, and Epic Rides publishes a daily holiday bus schedule from December 18 to January 3. The day comes down to three choices: which date you pick, how you get back to Vancouver, and what is open that day.

If you want a snowy mountain village, a festive meal and perhaps a gondola ride, Christmas in Whistler makes a good day out. A white Christmas at Village level, an uncrowded ski day or a late celebration with an easy ride home all take more planning.

Quick answer: December 24 suits a relaxed festive day with a return in the late afternoon. December 25 works if you book the bus, the gondola and lunch in advance, but skip Wintersphere, which is closed that day. December 26 is the start of the busiest week of the season, so book everything before you go. In 2026, December 24 is a Thursday, December 25 a Friday and December 26 a Saturday.

If you would rather not plan the transport yourself, the From Vancouver: Whistler, Sea to Sky Gondola & Shannon Falls day trip (4.7/5 from more than 1,400 reviews, from about $121) covers the drive, Shannon Falls, the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish and free time in Whistler Village. It runs every day of the winter except December 25, so on Christmas Day take the bus instead. Check the tour calendar for December 24 and 26, because holiday-week seats go early.

Which Christmas date is best for a Whistler day trip?

DateBest forBiggest considerationOur take
Thursday, Dec 24Festive atmosphere, Village strolls, daytime sightseeingSome businesses may close early; dinner tables go fastThe easiest festive day trip if you head back in the late afternoon
Friday, Dec 25Christmas Day on the mountain, skiing, a special mealHoliday closures and limited reservations for some activitiesPossible, but book lunch and transport first
Saturday, Dec 26A busy winter holiday atmosphere, skiing, familiesFirst day of the restricted peak period; heavy demand and highway trafficGood if you prebook everything and start early

The Village can be decorated even when no fresh snow has fallen at street level. Mountain conditions and Village snow cover are different, so do not book a trip on the assumption that every path will be white. Our guide to whether Whistler has snow in December explains the difference.

More to book around Whistler over the holidays: snowmobile trips into the Callaghan Valley, snowshoeing in the Coast Mountains, ziplines over Fitzsimmons Creek, and day trips from Vancouver that stop at Shannon Falls and the Sea to Sky Gondola.

Is Whistler open on Christmas Day 2026?

Whistler does not close for Christmas. Whistler Blackcomb lists winter 2026–27 sightseeing hours of 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and lift hours of 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from November 20 to January 15, a window that includes December 24, 25 and 26. The hours page gives no separate holiday hours for those dates, and it says opening times are subject to weather and conditions. Check the Whistler Blackcomb hours page and the Lift & Terrain Status report before you go, because holiday hours can still be announced.

One part of the festive program closes on Christmas Day: Wintersphere, the free indoor family event at the Whistler Conference Centre, runs from December 19, 2026 to January 2, 2027, but is closed December 25. Do not plan a Christmas Day itinerary around it.

Restaurants may offer special Christmas meals, but service varies. A place that serves dinner on December 25 may not take walk-ins at lunch, and a festive buffet may be reservation-only. For an independent day trip, book a midday meal or have a backup plan.

Check before you go: Tourism Whistler’s Christmas page for holiday events and Whistler Blackcomb operating hours for the mountains.

Getting from Vancouver to Whistler over Christmas

Whistler is about 120 km north of Vancouver on the Sea to Sky Highway (Highway 99). The drive usually takes 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours in good conditions. Winter weather, crashes and holiday traffic can make it much longer.

Option 1: Scheduled bus, best for independent visitors

A scheduled coach is the simplest way to reach Whistler Village without driving. Epic Rides’ holiday schedule for December 18, 2026 to January 3, 2027 has daily departures from Burrard Station at 6:20 a.m., 8 a.m., 9 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The last daily buses back leave Whistler’s Gateway Loop at 4 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., with a 9 p.m. bus on Fridays only. December 25 is a Friday in 2026, so check whether the Friday extras run on Christmas Day. The ride takes about 1 hour 45 minutes, and arrival times are estimates. Epic Rides charges CAD 44 return.

A published schedule does not prove that seats remain or that every bus runs on a holiday. Check your exact date in the Epic Rides booking engine, especially December 25, and book the return at the same time. Our guide to Whistler between Christmas and New Year has the full holiday timetable, a price list with sample budgets, and advice on when an overnight stay makes more sense than a day trip.

YVR Skylynx also runs from downtown Vancouver and the airport; its Vancouver City Centre to-or-from Whistler or Squamish (One-way) ticket (4.7/5 from 367 reviews, from about $34) suits travelers staying downtown, and the airport bus suits anyone near YVR. Departure points, luggage rules and holiday times differ by operator. Our Vancouver to Whistler bus guide compares the stops.

Option 2: Guided sightseeing tour, best for a first visit

A guided tour from Vancouver removes the driving, the parking and the return booking. Many winter tours stop at viewpoints or in Squamish on the way. You get less free time in Whistler, and the two main winter day tours do not run on December 25.

The Whistler, Sea to Sky Gondola & Shannon Falls day trip pairs the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish with time in the Village and runs on December 24 and 26 but not on Christmas Day. Landsea’s winter From Vancouver: Full-Day Whistler Tour (4.8/5 from 240 reviews, from about $134) runs from October 26, 2026 to March 31, 2027 and stops at Squamish Canyon and Mamquam Falls instead of the gondola; it has no departure on December 25 either. Westcoast also sells its gondola tour on Viator as Whistler, Sea to Sky Gondola, & Shannon Falls Tour from Vancouver (4.8/5 from more than 2,100 reviews, from about $167), and that calendar runs six days a week over Christmas week.

Before booking, check:

  • Does this departure run on December 24, 25 or 26?
  • How many hours does the tour spend in Whistler Village?
  • Are gondola tickets included, optional or not offered?
  • Is it sightseeing only, or is there time for a prebooked activity?
  • Where in Vancouver does it pick up and drop off?
  • What happens if Highway 99 or the lifts are affected by weather?

Compare formats on our Whistler winter tours from Vancouver page, then check the date on the tour’s booking calendar. A tour shown online is not necessarily bookable on your date.

Option 3: Private driver or private tour, best for families and flexibility

A private service suits groups that want hotel pickup, a custom stop or time for a lunch reservation. The Private Whistler Sightseeing Tour: Discover all of Whistler in Comfort! (5.0/5 from 65 reviews, from about $222) is one option. Private still means fixed hours, weather policies and holiday availability. Check whether the price is per vehicle or per person, and whether gondola tickets, activities or gratuities are included. Our private Whistler tours page compares more of them.

Option 4: Self-driving, only if you are ready for winter roads

Highway 99 is scenic but can be slippery, snowy or congested. Winter tires are required on the Sea to Sky route from October 1 to March 31. Check the tire marking and tread-depth rules, and confirm your rental car has the right tires. A car collected in Vancouver is not automatically fitted for the highway.

Check DriveBC for incidents, weather and webcams before you leave and again before you head back. The return after dark or in a storm can take well over two hours.

What to do in Whistler on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or Boxing Day

1. Walk through Whistler Village

You do not need to ski to enjoy the car-free Village. Browse the shops, look at the decorations, warm up with a hot chocolate and watch skiers come off the slopes. This is the easiest activity to fit around a short day. On December 25, shop hours vary, so treat shopping as a bonus.

2. Ride the mountain gondolas as a sightseer

For non-skiers, a sightseeing ride up the mountain is often the highlight of the day. Sightseeing runs 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from November 20 to January 15, depending on conditions. A sightseeing ticket does not cover every lift, and a PEAK 2 PEAK crossing needs the connecting lifts to be running. The adult winter sightseeing ticket costs CAD 158 (ages 19 to 64) bought in advance; our PEAK 2 PEAK guide has the full price list.

Allow at least two to three hours for ticket pickup, queues, the ride up, photos, a break on the mountain and the ride down. On holiday dates, leave more margin and avoid a tightly timed restaurant booking straight afterward.

Before buying: read the Whistler Blackcomb hours, check who the sightseeing ticket covers, and read the weather policy.

3. Ski or snowboard, if you have enough time

You can ski Whistler on Christmas Day. An afternoon ski plan from Vancouver can be expensive and rushed once you add travel, lift access, rentals and the 3:30 p.m. lift closing. If skiing is the main goal, take an early bus, arrange equipment beforehand and check the pass restrictions for your dates: from December 26, many restricted passes are not valid.

First-time skiers who need lessons usually get more out of an overnight visit than out of fitting travel, rentals, a lesson and the trip home into one day.

4. Try a winter adventure activity

Whistler operators run snowmobiling, snowshoeing and ziplining in winter. The Whistler Wilderness Run Snowmobile Tour (4.9/5 from 796 reviews, from about $244) rides forest trails for 3 hours, the Medicine Trail Snowshoe Tour (4.9/5 from 294 reviews, from about $122) is a gentler guided walk in the Callaghan Valley, and the Zipline Adventure in Whistler (4.9/5 from more than 1,500 reviews, from about $122) crosses Fitzsimmons Creek. Confirm with each operator that your date, December 24, 25 or 26, is on the calendar. Some meeting points are outside the Village, so you may need the operator’s shuttle or a taxi to reach the start.

For a day trip, choose one main paid activity, not three. Check the door-to-door timing, minimum age or weight rules, clothing, cancellation terms and the last bus home. Our non-ski winter activities guide has more ideas.

5. Visit Wintersphere, except on December 25

Wintersphere runs from December 19, 2026 to January 2, 2027 at the Whistler Conference Centre and is closed on December 25. Its free festive family activities make it a good stop on Christmas Eve or Boxing Day. Check the daily program and hours on Tourism Whistler’s Christmas page before you promise the children a particular activity.

With children on December 25 itself, swap Wintersphere for a Village walk, a prebooked gondola ride or another attraction confirmed open that day.

6. Book a Christmas meal in advance

A festive meal can be the focus of the outing, especially for couples or families who are not skiing. Look for confirmed December 24 or 25 service and check whether a deposit, set menu or minimum spend applies. A restaurant’s seasonal page is not a reservation.

Day-tripper tip: a booked lunch fits a same-day return to Vancouver far better than a late Christmas dinner. For an evening celebration, stay the night.

Three realistic Christmas day-trip itineraries

These examples use Epic Rides’ published holiday schedule as a framework. They are not a guarantee of seats or of what is open.

Itinerary A: Christmas Eve, December 24, festive Whistler without skiing

Approximate timePlan
8:00 a.m.Leave downtown Vancouver on a prebooked bus
9:45 a.m.Arrive in Whistler Village; coffee and a walk
10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.Prebooked gondola sightseeing, if running
12:45–2:00 p.m.Lunch in the Village
2:00–3:15 p.m.Festive walk, shops or Wintersphere
4:00 or 5:30 p.m.Return bus to Vancouver, depending on your booking

Why it works: it balances the mountain and the Village and leaves time for a relaxed meal. If sightseeing is cancelled, you still have a good Village day.

Itinerary B: Christmas Day, December 25, snow and a special lunch

Approximate timePlan
6:20 or 8:00 a.m.Prebooked Vancouver–Whistler bus
8:05 or 9:45 a.m.Arrive and walk through the Village
10:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m.Sightseeing gondola if open and ticketed
12:45–2:15 p.m.Prebooked Christmas lunch
2:15–3:30 p.m.Photos and a last Village stroll
4:00 or 5:30 p.m.Prebooked return bus

Why it works: it does not rely on Wintersphere, which is closed December 25, or on a late bus home. If you want a full Christmas dinner, this is the wrong day-trip plan; book a room instead.

Itinerary C: Boxing Day, December 26, an active winter day

Approximate timePlan
6:20 or 8:00 a.m.Leave Vancouver
MorningPrebooked activity or gondola sightseeing
Early afternoonLunch and a Village walk
Mid-afternoonWintersphere or another confirmed activity
5:30 or 7:00 p.m.Return to Vancouver

Why it works: Boxing Day usually has more activities running than Christmas Day, but it opens the busiest week of the season, so do not count on walk-up tickets.

Should you book a guided tour or go independently?

Your situationBetter starting pointReason

To compare sightseeing tours, start with Whistler winter tours from Vancouver. Check whether each tour includes the return trip, a gondola ticket, or neither.

What will Christmas in Whistler cost?

Holiday prices change from day to day, so build a budget from its parts.

ExpenseWhat to budget for
Return transportTwo bus fares (Epic Rides CAD 44 return) or the full price of a guided or private tour
Gondola sightseeingA sightseeing ticket for your date (CAD 158 adult in advance)
FoodHoliday lunch or set-menu prices, tax and tips
Extra activityThe operator’s per-person price plus any transfers
Winter clothingWaterproof boots and warm layers if you do not own them
ContingencyFlexible booking terms and possible weather disruption

The cheapest sensible plan is a return bus, a Village walk and a casual meal. Mountain sightseeing, private transport, a winter activity or a premium Christmas dinner raise the total quickly. Compare final checkout prices, not starting fares.

Christmas crowds, daylight and weather

Christmas week is a major holiday, so rooms, restaurants, buses, lessons and popular activities fill up. Book transport before a timed activity: a snowmobile slot is no use if you cannot reach the meeting point or catch the bus home.

Days are short in late December. Most outdoor sightseeing fits between late morning and mid-afternoon, and part of the trip home will be in the dark. Village temperatures often sit around freezing, while the upper mountain can be much colder and windier. Rain in Vancouver tells you little about Whistler’s slopes, and mountain snow does not guarantee snow in the Village.

Pack waterproof boots with good grip, warm socks, layers, gloves and a hat. Bring a power bank, snacks and water. If the weather turns, read the operator’s cancellation policy; a storm does not automatically mean a refund.

Is Whistler worth visiting at Christmas if you don’t ski?

Yes, if you want the atmosphere of a mountain resort and can live without a promise of powder snow underfoot. A Village walk, a mountain ride when conditions allow and a special meal make a good holiday day. If you have one day in Vancouver and little interest in Whistler itself, the four-hour round trip may feel long.

If you mostly want to touch snow or take a winter photo, read our guide to snow in Whistler from November to February before choosing the date.

Frequently asked questions

Can I go from Vancouver to Whistler on Christmas Day, December 25, 2026?

Yes, by bus. Whistler does not close for Christmas, and Epic Rides publishes a daily holiday schedule from December 18 to January 3. The two main GetYourGuide day tours, Westcoast Sightseeing’s and Landsea’s, have no departure on December 25. Check bus seats for December 25 itself before you book anything else.

Are ski lifts open in Whistler on Christmas Day?

Whistler Blackcomb lists lift hours of 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and sightseeing hours of 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from November 20 to January 15, with no separate hours shown for December 25. Lifts depend on snow and wind, so check the Lift & Terrain Status report on the morning you travel.

Is Wintersphere open on Christmas Day 2026?

No. Wintersphere runs from December 19 to January 2 and is closed December 25.

Do I need a car for a Whistler Christmas day trip?

No. Epic Rides and YVR Skylynx run buses between Vancouver and Whistler Village, and guided tours and private transfers are the alternatives. Book your return when you book the outbound trip.

Is December 24 or December 26 better for a day trip?

December 24 suits a quieter festive day, though some businesses may close early. December 26 suits a fuller activity day but is the first restricted peak date of the holiday week, with heavier demand. Neither date guarantees better snow.

Can I do PEAK 2 PEAK, snowmobiling and a Christmas meal in one day?

Usually not from Vancouver. Mountain sightseeing takes time, snowmobile tours may start outside the Village, and holiday traffic can slow the trip home. Choose one main activity and plan the day around it.

Will there be snow in Whistler Village at Christmas?

Often, but not always. Snow is more reliable higher on the mountain. Check recent photos, webcams and the forecast a few days before you go.

Is Whistler good for children on Boxing Day?

Yes, in general. The decorated Village and family winter activities suit children, and Wintersphere is open on December 26. Check age limits, capacity and any advance tickets before you travel.

Is it better to stay overnight at Christmas?

Stay the night if you want an evening meal, several activities, a full ski day or a cushion against winter road delays. A day trip works for a simple sightseeing visit with a confirmed bus home.

Before you book: Christmas trip checklist

  • Choose December 24, 25 or 26 and check the day of the week.
  • Book both legs of transport from Vancouver, or a confirmed round-trip tour.
  • Check the lift status and planned hours.
  • Confirm that any snowmobile, snowshoe or zipline tour runs on your date.
  • Book a Christmas lunch or dinner where needed.
  • If driving, check your winter tires and DriveBC road conditions.
  • Dress for colder, wetter weather than in downtown Vancouver.
  • Leave extra time before your return bus and read the cancellation terms.

Plan your Whistler Christmas day

For a first visit, plan one confirmed return trip, one main attraction and free time in the Village. Christmas Eve suits general festive sightseeing; Christmas Day works if you book its open attractions and your meal; Boxing Day suits an active outing booked in advance.

Compare Whistler winter tours from Vancouver or read our Whistler in December guide for the rest of the month. Then check the holiday timetable and availability for your date before you pay, because Christmas schedules can change.
