Whistler Between Christmas and New Year: Crowds, Prices & Tours
Visiting Whistler December 26 to 31, 2026? How busy it gets, which lift passes are restricted, published prices and sample budgets, the holiday bus timetable from Vancouver, tours and day-trip itineraries.
Whistler is a good place to be between Christmas and New Year, but December 26 to 31, 2026 is not a week to improvise. The Village is festive, both mountains are open for the season, and skating, gondola sightseeing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing make the resort enjoyable even if you never ski. Demand is the problem: buses, lift tickets, rooms, restaurants and popular tours all fill up.
Quick answer: From Vancouver, a prebooked guided sightseeing tour is the simplest way to see Whistler this week. A return bus suits you better if you want more time in the Village or a specific activity. If you plan to ski, check your exact pass: Whistler Blackcomb lists December 26 to 31, 2026 as restricted peak dates for Epic Day Passes, Epic Local Passes, Whistler Blackcomb Day Passes and restricted EDGE Cards.
The easiest low-stress outing is a walk through the Village, a stop at Wintersphere, an hour on the Olympic Plaza rink and a prebooked bus back to Vancouver. For a guided version, the From Vancouver: Whistler, Sea to Sky Gondola & Shannon Falls day trip (4.7/5 from more than 1,400 reviews, from about $121) adds Shannon Falls and the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish. Holiday-week departures sell out, so check the tour calendar for your date. A PEAK 2 PEAK day needs an early start, and a late New Year’s Eve visit is a different trip altogether.

Christmas week in Whistler at a glance
| Question | Short answer |
|---|---|
| Is Whistler busy December 26–31? | Yes. It is the peak holiday week; expect popular services to be busy even on weekdays. |
| Can you visit without skiing? | Yes. The Village, holiday events, skating, sightseeing and many guided activities do not need skis. |
| Can you do it from Vancouver in one day? | Yes, by bus or on a guided sightseeing tour. Choose your activity and return time before you book. |
| Will it snow in Whistler Village? | Possibly, but not on a guaranteed date. The mountain and the Village have different conditions. |
| Are lift passes restricted? | Yes, some pass types exclude December 26–31. Check the rules for your product. |
| Are prices higher? | Rooms and some activities cost more on peak dates. The Scandinave Spa, for one, charges its top rate from December 18 to January 3. Compare the quoted total for your date. |
| Should you stay overnight? | Usually not for simple sightseeing; yes for evenings, several activities or New Year’s Eve. |
Prices on this page are in Canadian dollars (CAD) unless marked as GetYourGuide prices, which are shown in US dollars. Schedules, availability, taxes and holiday prices can change.
How busy is Whistler between Christmas and New Year?
The stretch from Saturday, December 26 to Thursday, December 31, 2026 brings together school holidays, ski vacations, families staying at the resort, Vancouver day-trippers and international visitors. How congested a given day feels depends on snow, weather and which lifts or roads are affected. No public source counts crowds day by day, so any ranking of the six days would be guesswork.
What is certain is that Whistler Blackcomb lists all six dates as restricted peak dates for several passes. That signals high expected demand; it is not a live measure of queues.
Expect the most pressure at:
- Morning lift lines: especially when many people arrive at once. Weather-related lift closures push the queues onto fewer lifts.
- Central Village restaurants: lunch, après-ski and dinner are hard to get without a reservation.
- Bookable winter tours: snowmobiling, ziplining, spas and family activities have limited departures.
- Hotels and apartments: popular room types and family layouts go first.
- Buses and transfers: a bus on the timetable does not mean seats remain on it.
- Highway 99: holiday traffic and winter conditions both slow the drive.
For pass rules, see Whistler Blackcomb’s restricted peak dates. Tourism Whistler’s winter planning guide also advises booking lift access, rooms, restaurants, shuttles and popular activities ahead.
What about crowds in Whistler Village if you don’t ski?
The Village stays pleasant in peak season because you can walk its car-free streets at your own pace. A busy Village does not mean every activity is overrun. Step off the main Village Stroll, eat an early lunch or go indoors instead of spending the day in gondola queues.
With young children, plan warm indoor breaks. If you dislike crowds, keep to one booking, for example an early bus plus skating, and leave gondola sightseeing, lunch and shopping for another visit.
Which day is best: December 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 or 31?
There is no reliably quiet date in this six-day window. Choose by your goal, and do not assume a weekday will be empty.
| Date | Day | Best reason to choose it | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dec 26 | Saturday / Boxing Day | You have holiday time and want a full winter outing | Weekend plus holiday demand; restricted passes; few spontaneous options |
| Dec 27 | Sunday | Snowy Village, skating, guided sightseeing or a booked activity | Holiday bookings; check whether the Sunday Fire & Ice Show has started for the season |
| Dec 28 | Monday | A weekday for a planned sightseeing or ski trip | Still a restricted peak date; the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre is closed on Mondays |
| Dec 29 | Tuesday | A full Village day or a premium booked activity | Book ahead; conditions can change activity schedules |
| Dec 30 | Wednesday | Festive atmosphere without New Year’s Eve logistics | Restaurants and return buses can still be busy |
| Dec 31 | Thursday / New Year’s Eve | Free community celebrations in the Village | Day tours return too early for the evening events; the last daily bus to Vancouver leaves at 7 p.m. |
Best all-round choice for a Vancouver sightseeing day: December 28 to 30, if those dates have the bus seats and activity slots you want. They are not guaranteed to be quieter; they avoid the Boxing Day weekend and New Year’s Eve logistics.
Best for a festive evening: December 31, but only with a room for the night, a private transfer or a confirmed late ride home.
For December 24 and 25, including what closes on Christmas Day, see our guide to Whistler Christmas day trips from Vancouver.
How much does Whistler cost during Christmas week?
What you book matters far more than any average Whistler price. Someone taking the bus to walk the Village spends a fraction of what a family pays for lift tickets, lessons, rentals and a holiday room.
These are published prices checked in November 2026, not live quotes for your December date:
| Item | Published price | Holiday-week caution |
|---|---|---|
| Epic Rides, downtown Vancouver–Whistler return | CAD 44 per person | Book both directions; departures sell out |
| PEAK 2 PEAK winter sightseeing | CAD 158 adult (19–64), bought in advance | Depends on lift operations; check taxes and terms at checkout |
| Olympic Plaza ice skating | CAD 6.25 adult | First come, first served; capacity and weather limits |
| Olympic Plaza skate rental | CAD 7.25 | Limited rentals; the rink closes between sessions |
| Scandinave Spa Thermal Journey | CAD 185 plus tax, December 18 to January 3 | The spa’s top rate, seven days a week; book ahead |
| Medicine Trail Snowshoe Tour | from about $122 on GetYourGuide (4.9/5, 294 reviews) | Fixed start times; check minimum age and transport to the trail |
| Whistler Wilderness Run Snowmobile Tour | from about $244 on GetYourGuide (4.9/5, 796 reviews) | Rider and passenger rates differ; limited departures |
| From Vancouver: Full-Day Whistler Tour (Landsea, winter route) | from about $134 on GetYourGuide (4.8/5, 240 reviews) | Dates and seats vary; about three hours in the Village |
A “from” price is not a holiday checkout price. Before adding products together, check taxes, pickup points and whether one is already part of a bundle.
Three sample Christmas-week budgets
These are illustrations, not quotes. The food allowance is an assumption; rooms, extra transfers and activity taxes add to them.
1. Budget sightseeing without skiing
- Return Epic Rides bus: CAD 44 per adult.
- Olympic Plaza skating: CAD 6.25 entry + CAD 7.25 rental = CAD 13.50, if the rink is open and rentals are left.
- Food and drink: allow CAD 25–45 for lunch and a hot drink.
- Sample total: about CAD 83–103 per adult. Swap skating for a free Village walk and it drops.
2. Non-ski gondola day
- Return Epic Rides bus: CAD 44.
- PEAK 2 PEAK winter sightseeing adult ticket: CAD 158.
- Food and drink: CAD 25–45.
- Sample total: about CAD 227–247, before any tax or fees at the sightseeing checkout.
3. Guided Sea to Sky sightseeing
- Landsea’s winter Full-Day Whistler Tour: from about $134 per person on GetYourGuide.
- Lunch and purchases: extra.
- The price covers the guided day and pickup and drop-off from selected Vancouver locations; it does not include a PEAK 2 PEAK sightseeing ticket.
- If you would rather ride the Sea to Sky Gondola than visit Squamish Canyon, compare what each tour includes. They are different attractions on different itineraries.
So “Whistler is expensive at Christmas” needs context. The big costs are a premium activity or a hotel room, not a walk around the Village.
Our Whistler winter tours from Vancouver page compares current tour formats and inclusions.
Are Whistler Blackcomb lift tickets valid December 26–31, 2026?
Not every pass is valid on these dates. Whistler Blackcomb lists December 26–31, 2026 as restricted peak dates for Epic Day Passes, the Epic Local Pass, Whistler Blackcomb Day Passes, the restricted 2-, 5- and 10-day EDGE Cards, the Whistler Blackcomb Student Pass and the Epic SchoolKids pack. The Epic Australia Pass has a longer block, December 19 to 31. Check the rules for your pass by name.
A common mistake is buying a cheaper restricted product and only later finding the holiday dates excluded. An unrestricted ticket or pass costs more; buy the right one before you commit to flights, buses or a hotel.
Check these steps in order:
- Open the official restricted dates list.
- Find your exact pass or ticket, not just the word “Epic.”
- Confirm it is valid on your dates.
- Check whether it needs advance purchase, a reservation or activation.
- Check mountain openings and lift status shortly before you leave.
What are the ski lift hours over Christmas week?
From November 20 to January 15, Whistler Blackcomb lists lift hours of 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and winter sightseeing hours of 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., weather and conditions permitting. Snow, wind and avalanche control can change lift access, and the last upload can be earlier than the closing time.
With a 3:30 p.m. close, someone arriving from Vancouver at 10:45 a.m. has much less mountain time than someone arriving at 8:05 a.m. or staying overnight.
Use the Whistler Blackcomb hours page for the current times.
Can you ride PEAK 2 PEAK without skiing?
Yes. Non-skiers buy a winter sightseeing ticket: CAD 158 for adults aged 19 to 64 in 2026–27 when bought in advance, subject to mountain operations. Allow time for the gondola rides up, moving around the alpine and queues. Wear winter boots and a warm waterproof layer even if you are not skiing. Our PEAK 2 PEAK guide has the full ticket list.
Itinerary rule: a tour with only about three hours in Whistler Village is not enough for a relaxed PEAK 2 PEAK visit. You may spend much of your free time getting up the mountain or risk missing the pickup. If PEAK 2 PEAK is the priority, take an early bus and book sightseeing separately, or choose a tour whose operator confirms there is enough time.
Which Christmas-week tours are worth booking?
Choose the tour that fits your travel time and departure point. Many local activities start in Whistler; they do not include the two-hour trip from Vancouver.
1. Guided Vancouver–Whistler sightseeing: easiest for first-timers
A guided Sea to Sky trip suits people who want scenery, stops and a taste of Whistler without arranging connections. Landsea’s winter version of the From Vancouver: Full-Day Whistler Tour (4.8/5 from 240 reviews, from about $134) runs from October 26, 2026 to March 31, 2027. It is a full day of about 10 hours, stops at Squamish Canyon and Mamquam Falls, and gives you around three hours of free time in Whistler Village. For the Sea to Sky Gondola instead, the Vancouver: Sea to Sky Gondola and Whistler Day Trip (4.8/5 from more than 1,100 reviews, from about $120) is a similar price.
Three hours is enough for lunch, a walk, the shops, festive photos and a short extra activity. It is not enough for a day of skiing or a long gondola visit. A Sea to Sky Gondola stop in Squamish is not the same as a PEAK 2 PEAK ticket in Whistler.
Best for: first-time visitors, travelers avoiding winter driving, non-skiers who want a guided scenic day.
Not ideal for: long lift access, a lengthy spa visit or an evening holiday event.
2. Scheduled bus plus an activity you book yourself: most flexible
This suits a specific goal: skating, PEAK 2 PEAK, a short zipline tour or a long Village visit. Book both the outbound and return bus, then book the activity at a time with a real buffer either side. The Zipline Adventure in Whistler (4.9/5 from more than 1,500 reviews, from about $122) is one activity that starts in the Village.
Best for: adults on a budget, confident independent travelers and non-skiers who want control over the day.
Not ideal for: travelers who dislike separate bookings or need a transfer to a tour base outside the Village.
3. Snowmobiling: a special occasion, but plan the transfer
Snowmobiling is one of the most memorable winter activities here, and holiday-week slots go early. The Whistler Wilderness Run Snowmobile Tour (4.9/5 from 796 reviews, from about $244) rides forest trails and frozen lakes for 3 hours, and the 2 Hour Wilderness Adventure Snowmobile Tour in Whistler (4.9/5 from 628 reviews, from about $210) is a shorter option. For something gentler, the Medicine Trail Snowshoe Tour (4.9/5 from 294 reviews, from about $122) is a 3-hour guided walk in the Callaghan Valley.
Do not assume a Vancouver pickup. These tours usually start from a Whistler meeting point with a shuttle to the backcountry base, so allow for both the trip to Whistler and the tour’s check-in time. Book the activity first, or check it alongside your bus tickets before you buy non-refundable transport.
Best for: couples, groups and adventurous visitors happy to plan around a fixed departure.
Not ideal for: an 11 a.m. arrival with no onward transport arranged.
4. PEAK 2 PEAK sightseeing: the best snowy mountain views
For alpine scenery rather than festive Village streets, PEAK 2 PEAK is the best choice when the weather is clear. At CAD 158 for an adult, save it for a day with a good visibility forecast. Conditions change quickly, and a Village webcam does not show which lifts are running.
Best for: photographers, families with older children and non-skiers who want a mountain day.
Not ideal for: late arrivals or anyone with only 90 minutes in Whistler.
5. Spa and wellness: premium, and often calmer
The Scandinave Spa’s December 18, 2026 to January 3, 2027 dates fall in its peak pricing period, with the Thermal Journey at CAD 185 plus tax, seven days a week, on the spa’s rates page. The spa is outside the central Village, so plan a local bus or taxi. It is an adult wellness experience, not a family snow day.
Best for: couples or adults spending a long day or staying overnight.
Not ideal for: families with young children or anyone without time for an extra local transfer.
Free and low-cost things to do between Christmas and New Year
You can have a good holiday day without an expensive mountain excursion.
Explore the Christmas lights in Whistler Village
The car-free Village has holiday decorations, cafés, shops, public squares and plenty of winter photo spots. Tourism Whistler promotes self-guided festive light walks around the Village. You do not need a ticket to walk the streets.
Tip: plan a shorter loop for children and duck inside for a warm drink, so the day does not depend on long outdoor walks in cold or wet weather.
Visit Wintersphere at the Whistler Conference Centre
This is one of the few free indoor options with confirmed dates for the holiday week.
- Dates: December 19, 2026 to January 2, 2027.
- Closed: December 25.
- Where: Whistler Conference Centre.
- Admission: free.
Tourism Whistler lists festive family activities and entertainment. Daily activities and hours vary, so check the official holiday listing before promising children a particular performer or a visit from Santa.
Skate at Whistler Olympic Plaza
The outdoor rink opens on November 26, 2026, conditions permitting. Adult entry is CAD 6.25 and skate rental CAD 7.25; check youth and child rates at the rink. Rentals and ice space are limited.
Sessions run 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., 2:30 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m., with the ice closed for maintenance in between. Check holiday changes and live status on Tourism Whistler’s ice-skating page.
The Snow Zone next to the rink may open for snow play when conditions allow. It is not guaranteed on every December date.
Visit cultural attractions and indoor spaces
For a less weather-dependent day, try the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre, open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check its holiday hours before you go. Indoor attractions are a sensible backup when rain, wind or low cloud disrupt mountain plans.
Take a short winter walk
The Village is easy on foot, but snowy and icy paths can be slippery. Stay on cleared public paths, avoid closed or unmarked backcountry trails, and do not assume a summer lakeside route has safe winter footing. Snowshoe trails may need a paid pass, the right equipment and a check of trail conditions.
Getting from Vancouver to Whistler during the holiday week
Whistler is about 120 km and roughly two hours from downtown Vancouver in normal conditions, but winter weather and holiday traffic add time. The two simplest car-free options are a scheduled bus or a guided day tour.
Epic Rides: direct budget option
For December 18, 2026 to January 3, 2027, Epic Rides publishes these daily departures from Burrard Station in downtown Vancouver to Gateway Loop in Whistler:
| Depart Burrard Station | Arrive Whistler Gateway Loop |
|---|---|
| 6:20 a.m. | 8:05 a.m. |
| 8 a.m. | 9:45 a.m. |
| 9 a.m. | 10:45 a.m. |
| 12 p.m. | 1:45 p.m. |
| 2 p.m. | 3:45 p.m. |
| 4 p.m. | 5:45 p.m. |
The 6:20 a.m. bus also picks up earlier at UBC, Granville and Broadway, and Comox and Burrard. A 6:45 p.m. northbound bus runs on Fridays only.
From Whistler, the daily afternoon and evening buses leave at 4 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., with a 9 p.m. bus on Fridays only. That matters for New Year’s Eve: December 31, 2026 is a Thursday, so the Friday-only late bus does not run that night.
Epic Rides charges CAD 44 return, with luggage and skis carried free. Times are estimates, and the bus does not wait for late passengers. Book ahead and check for holiday notices on the Epic Rides timetable.
YVR Skylynx: downtown and airport departures
YVR Skylynx runs from downtown Vancouver and Vancouver International Airport to Whistler. Its winter timetable runs from November 22, 2026 to April 19, 2027. From Whistler, Standard buses leave at 4 p.m. daily, 7 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 8 p.m. Friday to Sunday, and an Executive bus leaves at 2:45 a.m. daily, reaching downtown Vancouver at 4:45 a.m.; check the Skylynx winter timetable before you plan around them. The Vancouver City Centre to-or-from Whistler or Squamish (One-way) ticket (4.7/5 from 367 reviews, from about $34) covers the downtown route, and the Vancouver Airport to-or-from Whistler or Squamish by Bus (Single trip) (4.6/5 from 383 reviews, from about $57) covers the airport.
Our Vancouver to Whistler bus guide compares both operators’ stops and fares.
Is driving faster or cheaper?
A car is convenient for families or trips outside the Village, but it adds fuel, parking, rental costs and winter-road responsibility. You may not save time if the Sea to Sky Highway is slowed by traffic or snow, and a rental car without winter tires is not legal for the route.
Highway 99 has a winter tire requirement from October 1 to March 31. Before driving, check tire markings and tread depth, read the forecast and check DriveBC for closures, warnings and webcams.
If you have little experience on mountain highways in winter, a bus or guided tour is less stressful.
Three realistic December 26–31 Whistler day-trip itineraries
These sample plans use Epic Rides’ published holiday timetable. They are not reservations. Allow extra time for queues, weather, walking and last lifts.
Itinerary 1: Budget festive Whistler Village day
Best for: families, non-skiers and first-time visitors to Vancouver.
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 8 a.m. | Leave downtown Vancouver on a prebooked Epic Rides bus |
| 9:45 a.m. | Arrive at Whistler Gateway Loop; walk to the Village Stroll |
| 10–11 a.m. | Explore the Village, the decorations and a coffee stop |
| 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m. | Skate at Olympic Plaza if open and there is space, or keep exploring |
| 12:30–1:30 p.m. | Lunch (book, or have a backup) |
| 1:30–3 p.m. | Free Wintersphere activities at the Whistler Conference Centre |
| 3–5 p.m. | Photos, shopping, hot chocolate and a slow walk |
| 5:30 p.m. | Prebooked Epic Rides return |
| 7:15 p.m. | Scheduled arrival in downtown Vancouver, road conditions permitting |
You can take the 7 p.m. bus back to see more of the evening lights, but it makes a long day for children. If the rink is full or closed, keep the day to the Village and Wintersphere, which need no booking.
Itinerary 2: PEAK 2 PEAK mountain sightseeing day
Best for: non-skiers who want high mountain views.
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 6:20 a.m. | Leave downtown Vancouver with Epic Rides |
| 8:05 a.m. | Scheduled arrival in Whistler; breakfast and warm up |
| 9:30–10 a.m. | Walk to the right gondola base; check today’s lift status |
| Around 10 a.m. | Start sightseeing when it opens, if the lifts are running |
| Late morning–early afternoon | Gondola rides, mountain views and time for queues or weather |
| 1:30–2:30 p.m. | Ride down well before closing; eat in the Village |
| 2:30–3:45 p.m. | Short Village walk and shops |
| 4 p.m. | Prebooked Epic Rides return |
| 5:45 p.m. | Scheduled arrival in Vancouver |
Do not book a second fixed-time activity straight after the mountain. Weather up high and holiday queues can make the gondola part slower than expected. Sightseeing closes at 3:30 p.m. in this period, and the last practical upload can be earlier.
Itinerary 3: Guided Sea to Sky sightseeing without the logistics
Best for: a simple scenic day, especially on a first visit to Vancouver.
- Book a winter sightseeing tour from Vancouver for your date, with a confirmed pickup time and drop-off point.
- Expect a day of about 10 hours on a tour such as Landsea’s winter Full-Day Whistler Tour.
- Its itinerary stops at Squamish Canyon and Mamquam Falls and gives about three hours of free time in Whistler Village.
- Use that time for a walk, holiday photos and lunch, not for skiing or several activities.
- Ask whether your tour includes the Sea to Sky Gondola or uses a different winter route. Do not assume PEAK 2 PEAK is included.
For group tours, check the cancellation deadline, pickup details, road-condition terms and excluded admissions before paying.
Can you visit Whistler December 31 and stay for New Year’s celebrations?
Yes, but plan the ride home first; our New Year’s Eve in Whistler guide goes through the options. Whistler usually holds free New Year’s Eve celebrations in the Village, with the Luminosity Parade at 7:45 p.m. in recent years. The 2026 times are not published yet; check the Tourism Whistler Christmas and New Year’s page before you go.
The last daily Epic Rides bus to Vancouver leaves at 7 p.m., before the evening events, and the 9 p.m. Friday bus does not run on Thursday, December 31. A standard sightseeing tour also returns to Vancouver too early. A late-night taxi from Whistler to Vancouver is not a sensible unplanned backup.
For the parade, dinner or nightlife, book a room for the night, arrange a private transfer, or confirm a late bus with the operator. On Thursday, December 31, 2026, the last evening YVR Skylynx bus leaves Whistler at 7 p.m., before the parade. The next one is the 2:45 a.m. Executive bus on January 1, so book that exact date on the Skylynx timetable and confirm it is running before you count on it.
Free local Whistler transit on New Year’s Eve is often advertised for getting around the resort, but it does not cover the trip between Vancouver and Whistler.
A separate note for families: the Fire & Ice Show is a Sunday-evening winter show, and Tourism Whistler has listed its 2027 season from January. Check the Fire & Ice listing before you count on seeing it on December 27.
Accommodation: is it worth staying overnight between Christmas and New Year?
Staying the night makes sense for a relaxed ski day, a long spa visit, several separate activities, New Year’s Eve, or a second morning on the mountain. It is poor value if your only goal is a few hours in the Village.
Compare the total cost of the stay, not just the first night:
- The nightly rate for your dates and group size.
- Any minimum-stay rule at the property.
- Parking and resort fees shown at checkout.
- Cancellation and deposit terms.
- Distance to the Village and the gondolas, especially without a car.
- Whether your bus or shuttle stops near the property.
Holiday minimum-night rules vary by property. Some listings require a longer stay over the holidays while others take single nights. Only live availability lets you compare.
If your dates are flexible, compare January 4 onward with December 26–31. January 4 falls outside the December 26–31 restricted block for the main restricted passes and after the Scandinave Spa’s peak dates, though room rates still need a live check.
Snow, weather and driving conditions at the end of December
Whistler is a reliable winter destination, but nobody can promise snowfall on a given day or deep snow in the Village. The Village and the alpine can have very different conditions. It can rain in the Village while it snows higher up, and wind or low cloud can stop mountain sightseeing even when the Village streets feel fine.
Check, in order:
- Whistler Blackcomb lift and mountain operations.
- Current conditions, webcams and the forecast for the elevations you plan to visit.
- DriveBC for Highway 99 closures and warnings.
- Your activity provider’s weather and cancellation policies.
- Your return bus booking and pickup point.
Pack waterproof boots with good grip, warm socks, insulating layers, a waterproof and windproof jacket, gloves and a hat. Clothes for damp Vancouver streets may not be warm enough on the mountain. If you mainly want to play in snow with children, have a backup in case the Village is wet and the Snow Zone is closed. Our guide to snow in Whistler from November to February explains what to expect.
What should you book first?
For the holiday week, the order depends on your main activity:
| Your priority | Book first | Then book |
|---|---|---|
| Village sights, skating, Wintersphere | Return transport | A restaurant if you want one; skating is first come, first served |
| Skiing | Lift access valid on your exact restricted date | Transport, equipment, lessons and a room if needed |
| PEAK 2 PEAK | Sightseeing ticket and an early arrival | Return bus with a buffer after lift closing |
| Snowmobiling or snowshoeing | A local tour departure | Both Vancouver bus legs plus the transfer to the meeting point |
| Scandinave Spa | Spa booking | Vancouver transfer and a local taxi or bus |
| New Year’s Eve evening | A room or a confirmed late ride home | Dinner and daytime activities |
| Guided Vancouver day trip | The tour, with pickup details | Extras only if they fit the free time in the Village |
The biggest booking mistake is locking in a bus before checking that the activity starts after you arrive. The second is buying a cheap ski pass that excludes your dates.
Frequently asked questions
Is Whistler crowded between Christmas and New Year?
Yes. December 26–31 is the peak of the winter holidays. Whistler Blackcomb lists those dates as restricted peak dates for several passes, and Tourism Whistler advises booking rooms, shuttles, popular restaurants and activities ahead. How busy a given day feels still depends on the weather.
Is Whistler more expensive between December 26 and 31?
Rooms and some activities cost more in this high-demand week; the Scandinave Spa, for example, charges its CAD 185 peak rate from December 18 to January 3. Bus fares and published admission prices give a baseline, but only a quote for your date shows the real cost. Watch for tax, booking fees, peak supplements and minimum-stay rules.
Can I ski Whistler Blackcomb from December 26 to 31 with an Epic Day Pass?
Not with an Epic Day Pass: Whistler Blackcomb lists December 26–31, 2026 as restricted dates for it. Other products have different rules, so check your pass by name on the official page before you travel.
Is there a good day between Christmas and New Year to avoid crowds?
No date in this week can be called quiet in advance. For a non-ski sightseeing day from Vancouver, December 28–30 is simpler to plan than New Year’s Eve, but that does not promise shorter queues.
Can I do Whistler as a day trip from Vancouver on December 27 or 28?
Yes. Epic Rides runs daily holiday buses, and other operators run winter buses and sightseeing tours. Book your return seat and avoid stacking activities with clashing start times.
Does Whistler have snow between Christmas and New Year?
The ski mountains usually have snow by then, though the amount varies. Snow in the Village on a given date is not guaranteed. Check the mountain and Village forecasts separately a few days before you go.
Are the Whistler gondolas open during Christmas week?
They are scheduled to run, subject to weather, snow and lift status. Whistler Blackcomb lists lift hours of 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and sightseeing hours of 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through January 15, 2027. Check the lift report on the morning you travel.
Is Wintersphere open December 26–31, 2026?
Yes. It runs from December 19, 2026 to January 2, 2027, closed only on December 25, at the Whistler Conference Centre. Admission is free. Check the daily program for updates.
Do I need tickets for Whistler Olympic Plaza skating?
No advance ticket: the rink is first come, first served. Adult entry is CAD 6.25 and skate rental CAD 7.25, and capacity, maintenance breaks, private events and weather can affect entry.
Can I see Fire & Ice on December 27, 2026?
Do not plan on it. Tourism Whistler has listed the Sunday Fire & Ice Show for its 2027 season from January. Check the event page in late December in case dates change.
Is December 31 better as a day trip or overnight stay?
For simple daytime sightseeing, a day trip is fine. For the evening parade or later celebrations, a room for the night or a confirmed late ride home is much safer, because the last daily bus leaves at 7 p.m.
Are Whistler restaurants open during the Christmas-to-New-Year period?
Many are open through the holiday week, but hours, menus, deposits and table availability vary. Book important meals, especially on December 31, and check whether children are welcome at the time you want.
Can I book snowmobiling after arriving in Whistler?
Possibly, but it is risky in the holiday week. Tours have fixed capacity and meeting points. Book the activity and the transport beforehand.
Plan the easiest Christmas week in Whistler
If you are visiting Vancouver and want a snowy holiday atmosphere without skiing, plan one good Whistler day rather than an overstuffed one. Book a return bus or a guided tour, walk the festive Village, visit Wintersphere and the Olympic Plaza rink, and leave time for a warm meal.
If mountain sightseeing is the priority, take an early bus and make PEAK 2 PEAK the main event. If you plan to ski, check the December 26–31 pass restrictions before you pay for anything else. And if the trip is about New Year’s Eve, book a room or a late ride home first.
Compare winter Whistler tours from Vancouver, then read our Whistler in December guide for weather and snow, because conditions this week change from year to year.
