Does Whistler Have Snow in November, December, January and February?
Does Whistler have snow in winter? Village snowfall and snow depth for November to February, why the mountain is white before the Village, when Peak 2 Peak opens in 2026, and how to find snow on a day trip from Vancouver.
Yes, Whistler has snow from November to February, but where you stand matters as much as the month. The upper mountain is usually white by late November. Whistler Village, at about 660 m, normally has snow on the ground from December, and in November it is often wet or slushy instead.
Quick answer: For snow underfoot in the Village, come from December to February. January and February have the deepest snow on the ground, and December adds the holiday lights. November is the gamble: the mountains can be snowy while the Village streets are wet, and Peak 2 Peak does not open until November 25, 2026.
From December to February, any day trip that gives you time in Whistler Village usually puts you on snow. The From Vancouver: Whistler, Sea to Sky Gondola & Shannon Falls day trip (4.7/5 from more than 1,400 reviews, from about $121) adds Shannon Falls and the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish. The gondola is closed for maintenance from November 16 to 26, 2026, and on those dates the tour runs a shorter day without it.

Whistler snow by month: at a glance
| Month | Snow on the upper mountain | Snow in Whistler Village | Good for | Main catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | Builds quickly in some years, slowly in others | Unreliable, especially early in the month | Late-month mountain trips, quiet early-winter scenery | Peak 2 Peak closed until November 25; many activities not yet running |
| December | Usually building | Likely on most days | Christmas atmosphere and winter sightseeing | Holiday crowds; rain can still fall in the Village |
| January | Settled winter snowpack | Usually snow on the ground | Mountain sightseeing, skiing, snow activities | Storms can cut visibility and slow the highway |
| February | Settled winter snowpack | Usually snow on the ground | Skiing, sightseeing, family snow days | Family Day weekend and school holidays are busy |
None of this is a forecast. One stormy November day can look more wintry than a mild February afternoon in the Village. For every month of the year, with weather, daylight and what is open, see our guide to the best time to visit Whistler.
The key distinction: Whistler Village isn’t the ski mountain
Whistler Village sits far below the upper slopes of Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. Rain in the Village can fall as snow higher up, so a white mountaintop does not mean snowy streets.
People mean very different trips when they say they are visiting Whistler:
- A bus trip to Whistler Village: you walk the pedestrian Village, visit cafés and shops, and see the mountains if the cloud lifts. Snow underfoot depends on the month.
- A guided Sea to Sky sightseeing tour: you stop along Howe Sound and in Squamish, then spend time in the Village. Many winter tours do not include a mountain lift.
- A Peak 2 Peak sightseeing visit: when the lifts are running, this takes you up into the alpine snow. Check the opening date, the weather and the last upload time.
- A ski or snowboard day: mountain snow matters most, and in early season only part of the terrain may be open.
Before you book, read the itinerary and check whether the snow part of your day happens in the Village or up the mountain.
Does Whistler have snow in November?
The mountains can get a lot of snow in November, but it is the riskiest of these four months if you want snow in the Village. Some years start with big storms, others take weeks to build a base, and the first week of November can look very different from the last.
The Whistler Village weather station averages about 66 cm of snowfall in November, but only about 11 days with 5 cm or more on the ground. Our Whistler in November guide goes through what is open week by week.
For the 2026–27 season, Whistler Blackcomb plans to open Blackcomb Mountain on November 20, 2026, and Whistler Mountain and Peak 2 Peak on November 25, conditions permitting. A target date is not a promise that the lift you want will run on your day.
November works if your dates are flexible, you enjoy the drive itself, and you would still be happy with a wet Village and snowy peaks in the distance.
Think again if snow is the only reason for the trip, your date is early in the month, and you have no plan for getting up the mountain.
Our Whistler winter tours from Vancouver page compares which tours run in November.
Does Whistler have snow in December?
Usually, yes, and in the Village as well as on the mountain. The Village averages about 114 cm of fresh snow in December, and by the end of the month there is typically about half a meter on the ground. Pacific storms can still bring rain at Village level, even at Christmas.
December suits non-skiers because the Village has its holiday atmosphere on top of the winter activities. Pack for wet weather and the day still works if it rains in the Village.
Early December is quieter, with snow that is less settled. Christmas and New Year bring the busiest buses, tours and hotels of the winter. Tour companies and attractions can change their hours on December 24, 25 and 26, so check your exact date. Our guide to Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day trips shows what is open.
For holiday weeks, events and weather, read our Whistler in December guide.
Does Whistler have snow in January?
January is a good choice for a proper winter mountain day. The snow has had two months to build, and the upper mountain is well into the ski season. The Village averages about 103 cm of new snow in January and has the deepest snow on the ground of these four months, about 60 cm by month end.
That does not mean blue skies and fresh powder every day. Heavy snow, fog and wind can stop gondolas, and a warm spell can still bring rain to the Village. If you are coming from Vancouver for the day, keep your date flexible or have a second activity in mind if the forecast is poor.
Does Whistler have snow in February?
Yes. February usually has a deep, settled snowpack, so you do not need fresh snow on the day to see a white landscape. It is a strong month for sightseeing, winter activities and families on school holidays.
Snow depth and new snowfall are different things. The Village gets less new snow in February than in January, about 64 cm, but still has close to 60 cm on the ground at the end of the month. Weather and visibility on your day matter as much as the depth.
February weekends can be busy, especially around BC Family Day. For February 2027, book transport and timed activities ahead, and travel on a weekday if you can.
What the Village snow records show
The figures on this page come from Environment and Climate Change Canada’s 1981–2010 climate normals for the Whistler weather station, which sits in the Village at 658 m. They are long-term averages for the Village. The ski slopes get more, and no average is a forecast for winter 2026–27.
| Month | Average new snowfall in the Village | Average snow on the ground at month end |
|---|---|---|
| November | 66 cm | 17 cm |
| December | 114 cm | 49 cm |
| January | 103 cm | 62 cm |
| February | 64 cm | 59 cm |
The upper mountain gets far more snow than this, so treat resort snowfall totals and Village figures as two different measurements.
Two things follow from the table:
- A month with less new snow can still be very white. February gets about the same new snow as November but has more than three times as much lying on the ground.
- A monthly total does not tell you what one afternoon will look like. Snow depth, the freezing level, storm timing, wind and visibility all change what you see on the day.
Best month to visit Whistler for snow if you don’t ski
Pick the month by what “seeing snow” means to you.
For a snowy mountain panorama: January or February
Plan a mountain sightseeing trip and check the lift status before you leave Vancouver. Peak 2 Peak runs for winter sightseeing from November 25, 2026, to April 18, 2027, and the views depend on the cloud. Our Peak 2 Peak tickets, prices and hours guide has the winter ticket details; sightseeing tickets are sold by Whistler Blackcomb.
For a festive winter atmosphere: December
Choose December if the holiday lights and warm cafés matter to you as much as the snow. The second half of the month usually has more snow on the ground than the first, but snowy Village streets are still not guaranteed.
For fewer crowds: late November or early December
These weeks suit flexible travelers who do not need every winter attraction running. Check opening dates for each lift and activity, because “open in winter” can mean late November or mid-December.
For a family snow day: January or February, with an activity booked
If the children want to play in snow, book an activity on snow rather than counting on a patch beside a Village path. The Medicine Trail Snowshoe Tour (4.9/5 from 294 reviews, from about $122) is a 3-hour guided snowshoe walk through old forest in the Callaghan Valley. For more speed, the Whistler Wilderness Run Snowmobile Tour (4.9/5 from 796 reviews, from about $244) rides forest trails and frozen lakes for 3 hours. Check the minimum ages for both before you book.
Can you see snow on a day trip from Vancouver?
Often, yes, especially from December to February, if you pick the right trip. A day trip follows the Sea to Sky Highway, and the drive usually takes about two hours each way in good conditions. Snow, traffic and stops can make it longer.
| Trip type | What you get | Chance of snow | Main limit | Our pick on GetYourGuide or Viator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guided sightseeing coach | Transport, scenic stops and Village time | High from December to February, low in early November | Most winter tours do not include a mountain lift | Whistler, Sea to Sky Gondola & Shannon Falls, from about $121, 4.7/5 (1,400+ reviews) |
| Scheduled bus and a Village visit | Flexible time in Whistler | Same as the Village, so best from December | You plan your own activities and the return | YVR Skylynx from Vancouver city center, from about $34 one way, 4.7/5 (367 reviews) |
| Transport plus mountain sightseeing | A ride up into the alpine snow when the lifts are open | Highest, not guaranteed | Costs more and needs careful timing | Peak 2 Peak tickets are sold by Whistler Blackcomb; see our Peak 2 Peak guide |
Check whether a tour includes Peak 2 Peak admission, only a view of the mountains, or neither, because they are very different days. Our guide to Vancouver to Whistler in winter by bus, tour or car compares the ways to get there when the road is snowy.
Landsea also runs a winter version of its From Vancouver: Full-Day Whistler Tour (4.8/5 from 240 reviews, from about $134) from October 26, 2026, to March 31, 2027, with Squamish Canyon and Mamquam Falls in place of the gondola.
A realistic winter snow day-trip plan
This sample day suits a January or February visit when you want scenery and snow without skiing. The times are an example, not an operator’s schedule.
| Approximate time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 7:30–8:30 a.m. | Leave Vancouver on a prebooked bus or tour |
| 10–11 a.m. | Arrive in Whistler, with extra time for winter roads |
| Late morning to early afternoon | Ride Peak 2 Peak or another prebooked mountain trip, if it is running and fits your arrival time |
| Early afternoon | Lunch and a walk through Whistler Village |
| Mid to late afternoon | Catch your return bus to Vancouver at its actual departure time |
| Evening | Back in Vancouver, depending on traffic and road conditions |
A lift’s scheduled opening time does not mean it will run that day. Check the lift status, the sightseeing route, the last upload and download times, and your return bus time. If the timing is tight, keep the day in the Village or stay overnight.
Does Peak 2 Peak run from November to February 2026–27?
Whistler Blackcomb’s published schedule has Blackcomb Mountain opening on November 20, 2026, and Whistler Mountain and the Peak 2 Peak Gondola on November 25, 2026, with Peak 2 Peak running until April 18, 2027. If you are coming between November 20 and 24, you can ride lifts on Blackcomb but not Peak 2 Peak.
Check the latest hours and live lift status for your date:
Wind, avalanche control and other operational issues can close sightseeing lifts, even on a snowy day.
How to check if there will be snow when you visit
Run these checks a few days before you commit to a snow day trip, and again on the morning you travel:
- The official snow report: recent snowfall, base depth and which parts of the mountain are open.
- Mountain webcams: they show the real scenery and visibility far better than a weather icon.
- The forecast by elevation: a forecast for the Village can miss what is happening higher up.
- Lift and gondola status: mountain snow does not help a sightseeing plan if the lift is closed.
- Highway conditions on DriveBC: storms slow the drive, and operators can change or cancel trips.
- What your ticket includes: transport, lift admission, activity costs and the cancellation terms.
For the season ahead, use Whistler Blackcomb’s hours of operation. On the day, follow the live snow report, lift status, webcams and DriveBC.
What to wear to Whistler to see snow
Whistler’s coastal mountain weather is damp as well as cold. Even if you are not skiing, pack for rain and snow:
- A waterproof jacket, and waterproof pants if you plan to play in the snow
- Warm layers you can take off indoors
- Insulated boots with a good grip for wet or icy paths
- Gloves, a hat and a spare pair of dry socks
- Sunglasses and sunscreen for bright days on snow
- A small backpack for layers, water and snacks
If you are going up the mountain, dress for the top, which is colder and windier than the Village. Our full winter packing list covers each type of day trip.
Frequently asked questions
Is there guaranteed snow in Whistler in December?
No. The mountains usually have snow in December and the Village has snow on the ground on most days, but rain can fall at Village level and nothing is guaranteed. Where you go matters as much as when.
Is November too early for Whistler snow?
Not always. Heavy snow is possible, especially late in the month, but lift openings and snow in the Village are less predictable. If you come in early November, have a plan that works without snow.
Is January or February better for snow in Whistler?
Both usually have a deep, settled snowpack. January gets more new snow in the Village; February has longer days and about the same depth on the ground. Choose by your dates, prices and activities.
Can I visit Whistler in winter without skiing?
Yes. You can walk the Village, eat out, ride the gondolas when they run, and book snowshoe and snowmobile tours. Our things to do in Whistler in winter besides skiing guide has more ideas, and our winter tours page covers tours from Vancouver.
Will Whistler Village be covered in snow at Christmas?
Often, but not reliably. Treat snowy streets at Christmas as likely rather than certain.
Do I need to stay overnight to see snow near Whistler?
No. A day trip works, especially from December to February or with a booked mountain trip. An overnight stay gives you a second chance if the weather or the lifts spoil your first plan.
Is the drive from Vancouver to Whistler snowy?
Sometimes. The highway can be wet near Vancouver and snowy farther north. Check DriveBC before you leave, and read our winter guide to Vancouver to Whistler by bus, tour or car before you decide to drive.
Can I just get off a bus and play in snow in Whistler?
Not reliably. There may be snow in the Village, but not every snowy roadside spot is safe for play. Book a snow activity or use an open visitor area instead.
The bottom line
To see snowy mountains without skiing, January and February are the safest bets. December mixes winter scenery with the Christmas atmosphere, and November is the most variable, both for snow in the Village and for which lifts are open.
Pick the trip as carefully as the month. A Village coach trip, a ski day and a Peak 2 Peak ticket are three different days out.
Compare the winter Whistler tours from Vancouver, check the lift status for your date, and choose a day that still works if the Village is wet.
