The Sea-to-Sky Highway
What You'll See on the Journey
Whistler is about 120 km (75 miles) north of Vancouver on Highway 99, the Sea-to-Sky Highway: roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours without stops. A day tour turns that drive into most of the day's sightseeing, stopping on the way up and giving you about three hours in Whistler Village. Here is the usual order.
- Leave Vancouver over the Lions Gate Bridge — Pickup is usually between 7 and 8:30am. The coach crosses Burrard Inlet into West Vancouver and joins Highway 99 at Horseshoe Bay, the ferry village where the Sea-to-Sky corridor begins.
- Howe Sound and the coast road — For the next hour the road runs above Howe Sound, a fjord with the Coast Mountains dropping straight into the water. Porteau Cove and the Britannia Mine Museum are on this stretch; most tours point them out from the coach without stopping.
- Shannon Falls, 15–30 minutes — A short, easy path of about 350 m leads to the base of Shannon Falls, which drop 335 m and are BC's third-highest. The 700 m granite face of the Stawamus Chief stands right next to them.
- Sea to Sky Gondola, about 90 minutes — Just south of Squamish, a roughly 10-minute ride climbs to a summit 885 m above Howe Sound, with the Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge and short trails to viewing platforms. Most gondola tours run spring to autumn, and the gondola itself closes for maintenance from 9 to 26 November 2026.
- North through Squamish to Whistler — Past Squamish the highway climbs through forest toward Garibaldi Provincial Park, with the Tantalus Range to the west, and reaches Whistler about an hour later.
- About three hours in Whistler Village — Free time for lunch, the Olympic Plaza and rings, the Village Stroll, the Audain Art Museum or the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre. This is also the window for an add-on like a zipline, which needs to be booked in advance and timed to fit.
- Back to Vancouver by early evening — The return is usually direct, arriving between about 6 and 7:30pm. The whole day runs 9 to 11 hours depending on the tour.

Snowmobile tours
Guided rides in the Callaghan Valley, on Sproatt or on Cougar Mountain, on a machine you drive yourself. Drivers must be 19 or older with a full driver's licence. Most tours take about three hours from pickup, so they suit an overnight stay better than a day trip.
Helicopter tours
Flights of about 30 minutes to just over an hour over glaciers, Garibaldi Lake and the Black Tusk, several with a landing on a mountain or glacier. Operators fly year-round and don't charge when weather cancels a flight.
Zipline tours
Ziptrek's lines cross the valley between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, and Superfly runs longer lines higher up. A two-to-three-hour zipline takes most of a day trip's free time in the village, so book the tour time before you commit.
PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola
A different lift from the Sea to Sky Gondola: 4.4 km between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, 436 m above the valley floor. Whistler Blackcomb sightseeing is closed until winter tickets start on 20 November 2026 (adult pre-book CAD 158).

Autumn colour and almost no snow at village level. The last spring-to-autumn gondola tours run this month (Pacific Coach to 31 October), and winter tires become mandatory on Highway 99 from 1 October.
November
The wettest month, with the first lasting snow late in the month. The Sea to Sky Gondola closes for maintenance 9–26 November 2026, and Whistler Blackcomb opens for winter on 20 November, when PEAK 2 PEAK sightseeing restarts.
December
The snowiest month, and snow normally stays on the ground in the village from now until March. Snowmobile, sleigh and evening zipline tours are running, and the Olympic Plaza turns into a skating rink.
January
About 1 m of snowfall in the month at village level and around 54 cm lying on the ground on average. Snowmobile, snowshoe and winter zipline tours are in season; allow extra time on the highway.
February
The deepest average snow of the year at village level, with longer days than December. It is a good month for a first-time winter visit that combines a day tour with one Whistler activity.
Temperatures are average daily highs and lows at Whistler Village (Environment Canada normals). The alpine is colder and snowier.

The notes below cover what the day actually involves, so you can pick a tour that suits your date and your group.
How long the day takes
Whistler is about 120 km (75 miles) north of downtown Vancouver on Highway 99. Driven without stops it takes about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours, and longer in snow. A day tour stretches that into a 10- or 11-hour day: pickup between about 7 and 8:30am, 20 to 30 minutes at Shannon Falls, about 90 minutes at the Sea to Sky Gondola, roughly three hours of free time in Whistler Village, and a direct drive back that reaches Vancouver between about 6 and 7:30pm.
That is a long day on a coach, and the time in Whistler is shorter than it sounds once lunch is in it. Three hours covers the village, the Olympic Plaza and a museum or a gallery, or one short activity. It does not cover a hike, a day of skiing or a three-hour snowmobile tour.
Pickup and where tours start
The large day tours collect from downtown hotels. Westcoast Sightseeing lists 16 pickup hotels, Jupiter Legend 12 pickup points including airport hotels in Richmond, and Landsea more than 80 hotels if you call ahead. Pacific Coach picks up only from selected hotels. If you are staying in an apartment or out of the centre, check the pickup list on the listing before you book, or plan to walk to the nearest listed hotel.
Cruise passengers should allow for the ship’s schedule: at least one operator says it will not refund a tour missed because a ship arrived late, and a 10-hour tour is only realistic on a day you are not sailing.
What to wear
Dress for two climates. The summit of the Sea to Sky Gondola is 885 m above Howe Sound and is colder and windier than the city, and Whistler Village sits at about 660 m. Bring a warm layer and a rain jacket in any month, and walking shoes that cope with wet gravel for the gondola trails and the Shannon Falls path. From November to March the village usually has snow on the ground, so winter boots, a hat and gloves are worth packing even if you are only sightseeing.

A tour against driving yourself
Driving gives you your own hours and lets you stop at Porteau Cove, Britannia Beach or Brandywine Falls, which most tours pass without stopping. The costs add up differently, though. You pay for the car and fuel, the gondola ticket (CAD 73.95 online for an adult), CAD 10 to park at the gondola, and parking in Whistler, and from 1 October to 30 April the car must have winter tires on Highway 99. A tour includes the gondola ticket and hands the driving to someone who does the road every day.
For a first visit with one spare day, the tour usually wins. For a couple who want to hike, or anyone staying overnight, a car or the express bus (Epic Rides or YVR Skylynx, about 1 hour 45 minutes) is the better fit. Our Whistler day trips page sets out the tour, car and bus options in full.
Visiting between November and March
Winter changes the choice more than anything else. Most gondola tours run from spring to mid-October, the Sea to Sky Gondola closes for maintenance from 9 to 26 November 2026, and Whistler Blackcomb opens for the season on 20 November. The PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola is in Whistler and crosses 4.4 km between Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. Day tours from Vancouver include the Sea to Sky Gondola; PEAK 2 PEAK needs a separate Whistler Blackcomb sightseeing ticket.
